Dogs 101

Training your dog

Dogs are very important to human society and they have been living with humans for the last several thousand years. Dogs and humans have been needed each other for survival and thus have lead an important role in each others lives. Since dogs are social animals and so are people you will notice that we both (dogs and humans) are socially motivated. Some people even go as far as to say that some dogs have a “sense of humor.” Have you ever noticed that when there are a group of people around and there is laughter and positive energy some dogs quickly respond to it with extra tail wagging and boucing around energetically? Similarly some people respond to laughter by laughing also.

What is training?   Training is a form of organized learning for your dog. It is important to know that many behavior problems are inadvertently caused by us as pet owners by improperly interacting with our dogs. For example many dogs owners have problems with dogs jumping on them and their guests. This is a common problem that is caused by dog owners petting their dogs sometimes when they jump on them for various reasons when it may be acceptable but not realizing that the dog doesn’t differentiate with whether or not you have on nice clothes, or whether it has muddy paws, if you are carrying groceries, if your knees are hurting, if it has sharp toe nails, and on and on. Your dog only knows is that sometime when he or she jumps on people they sometimes get petted or spoken to. One of several ways to teach your dog not to jump on you is by teaching your dog to sit first before being petted.

Have you been watching the Dog Whisperer and yet still can’t seem to figure out how to train your dog? What you need is more specific assistance from a trainer either one-on-one or in a group class. A lot of times your dog’s behavior problems will change into something else before you can fix the current problem and this may leave you wondering what happened. Also a visit by the trainer to your home often times is a good way to solve your dogs behavior problems because then the trainer can see most specifically what may be happening.
